For 3-1/2-years, Chet Dyreson designed and built a gas-powered all-terrain wheelchair to mainly use off-road. His ATV wheelchair, which gets 100 miles per gallon, was clocked at 55-miles-per hour by the highway patrol when he made a 4,000-mile trip down the interstates from Perris, California, to Washington D.C.

“All the odds were against me,” Tony Bell of Harpersville, Kansas, explains. “When I was born, the doctors told my folks that they’d better not get attached to me because I wouldn’t be around very long.” So from birth, Bell had to learn to fight to survive. “I’m probably the most-unlikely bullrider you’ll ever meet, and I know I have the most-extraordinary parents anyone ever had.” Bells parents told him he could pick anything in life he wanted to be, and at 8-years old, he told his mother, “I want to be a bullrider.” But then his mom said, “No, I don’t think so. Tony, you went through 18 surgeries before your first birthday, just to survive. You won’t become a bullrider.” But Bell made his parents hold true to their promise, and he became a professional bullrider.

Trevor Baucom of Clarksville, Tennessee was piloting his Black Hawk helicopter into combat in Afghanistan at 300 one morning. His helicopter was the leader of a group made up of an Australian team of Special Forces. This combat mission was the last of more than 50 that Baucom flew for the U.S. Army. Little did he know that his whole world was about to change.

Karen Roy of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, says, “When you have an intuitive feeling about something you shouldn’t do, don’t do it, because I did go to a bar after a voice inside me told me not to go. Someone grabbed my shoulder, and on the other side of the car, a man put a gun to my boyfriend Mike’s head. As soon as I felt the man grab my shoulder, I pulled my shoulder forward, and the man holding me hit me in the back of the head with his gun. I fell to the ground, the guy put his gun to my back and fired.” That one night changed Karen Roy’s life forever, but she fought back and found a new life, a new job and a new family.

These are the inspiring people you’ll meet in this book – people who have suffered great tragedies and have fought back to become extraordinary people. You'll see how they deal with spinal-cord injury, depression, disability and all the other obstacles in their way. Their message is simple You always can move forward, if you don’t give up.
