I read the blurb describing the book but the actual book was NOT anywhere the same so not sure what I was supposed to be reading. Book doesn't say anything about Dr. Wilson's wife and child dying in childbrith or Pia being attacked by a sheepherder; it does a detailed explanation as to why his Grandfather and father are estranged - Civil War. The book was an interesting history lesson on immgration in 1897 to the US; the Basque (euskaldun people of Spain); the Boise Basque population (they still are today); how Dr. Wilson was respected in that community. The love story could have been better developed - they basically went from 0 to 60 in their relationship immediately. Pia came from a little province in Basque Spain where tradition was everything; she has been educated by Father Ignacio so speaks with a cultured British accent, ok maybe I buy that; she immediately falls in love with an "outsider" and wants to defy her father. The "hot" doctor has women all over town after him and not one is jealous of his attention to the beautiful woman he is taking to dinner in the town's fine restaurant? Come on Sara really!! Dr Wilson is described as a gambler, likes to be "with" saloon girls, likes to drink whiskey and his father isn't happy about that and he treats everyone for free. This was not one of Sara's best efforts not sure where she was going with it but just when I thought it was headed one way it stopped and the history lesson began. Maybe there could be story about Marko's trip to Colorado (Pia's betrothed). I liked him and he got her off the hook so a little history is good like your other books. Susanna's Choice and Tallie's Hero were way better than this.

Hearts Unbound Sara Luck 9781476713168 Books Reviews

Great story of immigrants coming to America and the struggles they encountered. A story of love that crosses oceans, a new country and cultural traditions. I have found another favorite author,
I really wanted to fall in love with the characters and the story. I found the author to be a great writer, loved the way she spun the story and the way she described things but just couldn't get into the actual story. I will continue to read more Sara Luck novels because, like I said, I did not find my dislike for this book to be in the writing or way she told the story.
Our story begins in Guernica, Spain in 1897. Our heroine, Pia Alegria is helping her students learn English. Pia's father had left Spain 14 years before to make money to send for his family. Soon, he would send for them, but Pia nad her mother and sister are so nervous because its been 14 years since they have all been together. Pia and her sister were young children when their father left.
The trip from Spain is long and exhausting. But they finally make it to Boise. They were told to help at the hotel, which their father has half ownership of, until he can join them. While waiting for her father, Pia meets Bart Wilson, who is the son of the local doctor and a doctor himself.
The characters are likable and the story line is easy to follow. It is a love story between Pia and Bart mostly. However, I learned a lot about the Spanish immigrants of the late 1800's, the hardships they suffered in order to come to the United States, the discrimination they suffered, and a bit about what they went through at the start of the Spanish American War.
If readers' opinions you don't agree with bother you, don't read reviews. Read the book, form your own opinion, write your own review (glowing or not) and accept and respect others' opinion. With that said, RT rated this story with 3 stars out of 4 1/2, saying the story opened with a long, long build-up before Pia and Bart ever meet--65 pages worth. I have to agree. While it wasn't written all that bad, the bigger part of those pages were dull description of how immigrants (Pia and her family) traveled from their native country to America to meet up with her father--experiences all immigrants endured and we've seen in film clips or have read about and heard about dozens of times, unless you've lived under a rock for the last 70 years. When Pia and Bart do finally meet, it's not near as memorable as it could've or should've been. During the time Pia is traveling to America what's happening with her and what's happening with Bart jumps back and forth with many page breaks. Basically nothing but dull backstory with low impact conflict I don't need to know about (like Pia's ship and train journey--interesting research studied by the author, no doubt, but doesn't translate interesting in this story, since it had little to no bearing on the plot or romance between Pia and Bart. Or that Bart's father seems to have a low opinion of him despite his good doctoring skills). Up to page 115 I read mostly routine life with very little conflict. If an author wants to keep my attention, they'll have to get substantial conflict going early. I give this story 2 1/2 stars.
Love it, wonderful, great book. Great Author. Love reading all her books.
Thank you
Love the story
thanks a lot
