Cashelmara is the second in a kind of trilogy about the Plantagenets. Each book in the series is independent of the other two, and other than the connection to the Plantagenets, they are totally different. Cashelmara is a book about the 3 Edwards, but concentrating on Edward II.

Cashelmara is the estate in Ireland where the story is centered. The de Salis family, i.e the Plantagenets) is a wealthy, aristocratic family. Told in 6 parts, by 6 different characters, it is a fascinating way to relate to dry English history.

Lord Edward de Salis (Edward I) narrates Part One. He is the head of the family, but has only one surviving son, Patrick. The story begins as he journeys to New York (France) as a lonely widower going to visit his dead wife's cousins (The French King). He ends up marrying one of the girls (Princess Marguerite, of France, the niece of the current King) and travels back to England. He shows his bride his London townhouse, his lovely wooded estate in England called Woodhammer, and eventually he takes her to Cashelmara.

His wife narrates part II. She loves Patrick (Edward II) like a son, but fears for him because he is weak, easily led, and homosexual. Marguerite's story is twofold; her attempts to help Patrick, and a clear look at why that failed. Edward dies and we move on to Part III.

Narrated by Patrick, you get real insight into how his mind worked. He marries Marguerite's niece (daughter of the King of France, Isabella), Sarah. He had a childhood friend, Derry Stranahan (Piers Gaveston) to whom he was greatly attached, who indulged to the great anger of his tenants and his family.
Part IV is Sarah (Isabella the Fair)'s story, It's really where all the action is. There is the rise to prominence of the evil MacGowans, father and son (the Despensers), and how they tortured and demeaned her, with Patrick's blessing.tSarah finds help from Maxwell Drummond (Roger Mortimer), and they set about to gain control of Cashelmara and get rid of the MacGowans.
Part V is Maxwell's story, and the last part is Ned's story. He is the so of Patrick and Sarah and represents Edward III, who became one of England's greatest kings, until he was in his dotage.

Cashelmara, Penmarric and Gone with the Wind are my top 3 novels I loved best.

Cashelmara Susan Howatch 9780751535358 Books Reviews

How do you review a book that kept you reading long after the light should have been turned out or how three hours of reading time seemed like thirty minutes? The book is so incredible and well written jumping from England to Ireland to America and back. The hero of the story starts out as a young boy and it is the perfect example of "children are smarter than adults think and they assess character much better than adults." Raise them honestly with honor and love and they grow up to be honorable and loving. Children protect parents, especially those parents who have giant flaws because children love you if you have loved them, often when the love is unearned. Fabulous, wonderful read that will become a classic.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. The way the author moves the reader through time was fascinating, each section told to us by a different character. The way the author allowed us to climb into the hearts and minds of each character caught hold of me and never let go. I'm part Irish so I appreciated learning about that early history of Ireland. And learning more about how the landed gentry system evolved was also quite fascinating. If you like a story that grabs you and keeps you thinking about it no matter what you're doing, then this is book book for you.
Interesting story overall, but be aware that some sections of the book are unrelentingly dark and depressing, including graphic details of the Irish potato famine (which were educational) and an episode of revolting sexual violence. I didn't enjoy the book as much as I had expected.
Excellent read, follows 3 generations Ireland. Descriptive of both surroundings and people. Interesting insight into life in early Ireland, the reasons for emigration to America, the difficulties farming the land and famine.

The book also touches on the sensitive subjects of marital sex and homosexuality.
Of all the historicals Susan Howatch has written, I love Cashelmara the best.

If you're not familiar with Ms. Howatch's work, her historicals bring to life the reigns of English kings with an estate, in this case Cashelmara, representing England. The exception is The Rich Are Different and Sins of the Fathers. Those two books are based on Caesar, Cleopatra, Antony and Octavian.

Each of the major characters in Cashelmara tells their own story starting with Edward DeSalis and each character tells their part of the story from their own point of view. There is never one side to a story, and Ms. Howatch gives each of her characters a chance to tell their side.

As historical fiction, Cashelmara is well-researched and follows closely the lives of Edward I, Edward II, and the early life of Edward III.

As a novel, it's a rip-roaring tale with a cast of fascinating characters. Whether you know the history or not, you'll enjoy this multi-generational saga of lust and power; my favorite kind of book.

But for me, the real joy is the words. I can say these books are very well-written, but that's too easy a description. It might be more accurate to say that Ms. Howatch paints a picture with her words. No matter how I put it, the effect is that I am drawn into the lives of these people and I feel as if I'm a part of it all.

There are very few authors whose entire body of work I can read straight through. Susan Howatch is one of the few. I will be diving into the Starbridge Series for the fourth time when I finish the historicals. I have a lot of good reading to look forward to.
