Intimate Moments This book is a memoir, a bit of fiction, a collection of prose poetry in the haibun writing style, and an invitation to your own self-reflection. Following general haiku principles of brevity and description, with a focus on being in the moment, nature, and the human condition, this collection of haibun presents many of the author’s personal experiences, providing one person’s view of what being human can entail. These haibun share private thoughts, feelings, awareness, and memories covering childhood, adolescence, adult aging, relationships, grief and loss, or simply reactions to what the author encounters in his every day world. Sometimes amusing, often touching, easy to read in bits at a time, or in longer sittings, the contents are entertaining. Intended as a sharing of intimate moments with the reader, the author openly discloses his own personal reflections, hoping to induce similar reflection by the reader. Haibun, as a creative writing form, is explained and more than 180 haibun are presented. The contents offer a window into the author’s psyche and can be both amusing and touching.

If someone wants to learn about haibun, Intimates Moments is a good starting point. Gary Ford writes with such honesty he doesn’t need contrivances that sometimes cloud the meaning of poetic prose. Although at times unconventional, the haiku are interesting and serve as enhancements to the prose.The author takes the reader on a journey from his boyhood to finding a new purpose by caring for his granddaughter.
Parenting Stories is one of my favorites from the collection. When his daughter suffers anxiety after her baby almost falls from a counter, he soothes her with a story of letting her roll off a bed. This haibun brings back the memory of a similar incident with my own daughter. It is truly an intimate moment.

If you've ever wanted to write about your childhood or life, Gary Ford's collection shows one way to do it. It's a collection of vignettes from the distant past or present experiences written in the haibun style (prose plus haiku poetry). My wife and I, who have been together 5 years, enjoy reading one or two pieces during a meal and using Ford's memoirs to share our own pasts.
Ford’s “Intimate Moments” are the author’s reflections, in haibun form, of selected life experiences. The reader can readily identify with Ford’s expressions of pride, sadness, joy, doubt, regret, and empathy, among others. His haibuns are a journey of introspection, one that encourages the reader to do some personal examination of life events. I read the book in one sitting and was moved by Ford’s openness and honesty and amused by his self-effacing humour. I can easily recommend this most enjoyable and thought-provoking read.
I have been really enjoying this book after it was given to me by a friend. I have been reading it gradually, and the book rewards that approach. The writing is so openly personal that I almost felt I was intruding into the author's most private feelings. Then, I found I was reading it somewhat like a memoir, engaged and captivated by the opportunity to step into another’s life at such an intimate, level. This is probably heresy, but I’m not a huge haiku fan, although there are several that did convey a moment with gentleness and precision. The prose generally spoke more directly to me — especially the ones about his granddaughter that are so touching I almost cried. That said, I find that the haibun form -- with which I was completely unfamiliar -- grows on one. Heartily recommend.
I received this book as a gift and part way through I liked it so well I bought a kindle copy to read on my mobile when I had a moment during the day. It is a collection of haibun, one page stories about a special moment followed by a short poem that drives the experience home. I grew to understand that these intimate moments taken together provide the scaffolding that shape our lives. Ford’s sharing of his own Intimate Moments are vivid, honest, poignant, at times self deprecating and funny. His life comes alive in a way that captures the imagination and gives me respect for the strength, insight, humour and determination it takes to navigate life’s challenges and appreciate the unexpected moments that bring us joy, sorrow and a sense of wonder. Altogether the collection makes for a great read.
