Surely with tongue in cheek, one reviewer writes: " This book harkens (sic!) the best P.D. James mysteries." This is a pleasant book. It will be enjoyed by the average cozy reader. It neither attempts nor achieves anything like the density of plot nor depth of character development, complexity and profundity of the typical James novel, much less, her more ambitious ones. If you anticipate P.D. James you will be quite disappointed. The author could not have intended to live up to any such comparison. However, she has given us something James never intends nor produces, a light mystery which attempts little character analysis, darkness of real crime nor realistic law enforcement activity. She uses the Girls School as her major set, with side glances at the University with faculty interaction in both touched upon. Of course, the heart of the matter is who is sleeping with whom and how does that relate to the killing of the head of the school. The heroine is appealing, the touch is light, the final acts rather cursory but the whole an enjoyable fluff. One is best prepared to read the book if ignorant of the many legal and political impositions on life in educational institutions today. This is a book which does not intend to explore the dark, cruel, anxious intensity for many in academic spheres of every level.Product details

A quick and enjoyable mystery. Perfect to read on vacation. Looking forward to the next book in this series by Carole Shmurak.
This is one of a series of mysteries by this author. Like the others, it is an enjoyable story and a quick read. Great for airplane reading.

An excellent book. It is a real mystery with real characters. It is well written and enjoyable.
I normally am not a fiction reader, but since I went to a private all-girls prep school in CT, Deadmistress was something I felt I had to read. The well-developed characters and tight plot created a real-world in words. The author's insights into the human condition pulled me through the story, so that I could not wait for the next chapter and to see whodunit.
