Prentice Alvin Tales of Alvin Maker Orson Scott Card 9780312931414 Books
Bought this as addition to an old book I bought for myself in the late 80's. I read and enjoyed the first book, "Seventh Son" as a young man. I now have a teen Daughter who is quite the avid reader of SciFi/Fantasy books like I was. I dug "Seventh Son" out of storage and she really liked it. So for Christmas, she now owns mu old copy and I bought ALL the other books in the series for her. She was very happy to be able to continue the story. One of my few Christmas gift successes.Tags : Prentice Alvin (Tales of Alvin Maker) [Orson Scott Card] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have enjoyed the story of Alvin so far and intend to continue reading to find out what happens to him and to Crystal City.
I would like to warn potential readers though to stay away from the " Edition, November 30, 2009" version of the book as it is full of annoying typos.
Prentice Alvin is equally a good read. In it, Card deals with the Slavery issues in a fantasy background. Alvin, his primary character, is a person the reader can relate to, and it plays well into a future of Card's making.
I have all of Card's Alvin series but one, and it's on the way here.
How much "gooder" can it get.
Orson Scott Card is a great f&sf author. To my mind, this was perhaps the most entertaining of the Alvin Maker series, containing the beginnings of many of the most important sequences of events in the series. Hard to say more without spoilers.
If you're familiar with the author's science fiction novels, especially Ender's Game (enthusiastically recommended), if you read this fantasy series you'll note that it's much, much different than his science fiction works. There were a few moments in the series where events were somewhat more violent than I had anticipated, or would have liked. I would like to have known about this before I had begun reading the series. To be fair though, there is also some extraordinary healing to help compensate for this. The book seemed very unique in the following way. Imagine going back a couple of hundred years, and exploring what history may have been like if the world had been magically. It's sort of a historical fiction slash fantasy. You'll recognize some characters from your history books. My favorite part of the series is the characterization. Not as good to me as Ender's and his siblings in the science fiction novels, but still very good characterization.
In this third book of the Alvin Maker series, we see Alvin grow into a man. Comparatively, the first two books took place over a shorter time span and put more effort into developing the fascinating world Card has created. In PRENTICE ALVIN, there is much more emphasis on character development and maturation. Characters really come into their own in this book as well as develop some very intriguing relationships among themselves. Interactions between Alvin, Peggy, Arthur Stuart, Makepeace Smith, and others make this book a joy to read and gives you a depth of understanding of those characters that make them come to life.
The bulk of the book describes events that happen during Alvin's apprenticeship to the blacksmith of Hatrack River. The Unmaker returns to hound and molest Alvin, and a few characters from the first two books are brought back and built up. Cavil Planter is a new a very interesting character that has disillusioned himself into thinking that he is doing to work of the Lord while committing heinous crimes. Central to the story is the introduction of the pickanniny mimic Arthur Stuart, who will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the series.
The book is fast and entertaining, with the same great characters you love and a couple more that are sure to please. I can't wait to read the next installment!
Card's Alvin Maker series is a meditation on human extremes. Extreme evil, extreme good--along with magic. Card lets us see the best and worst in people, and yet, his villains are not completely evil and his good guys aren't completely perfect. A "maker" in the mythology of this series, is like being a Jesus. I like the explanation for how walking on water is done. Great book. I recommend this whole series. You can pick up any book along the way and not be disadvantaged.
Orson Scott Card. Need more be said? After reading ALL the "Ender Series", like 13, 14 or 15 books, you really understand why you couldn't wait to read the next in the series, then the next, the next and so on.
This is equally true of the "Tales of Alvin Maker" series. The alternative history line Card so incredibly and artfully depicts, with the Indian natives as the dominant and magical race is beyond refreshing. Please read all this author's book series for your own sakes.
